How big is the average dorm room?
Most U.S. double dorm rooms measure around 12 × 19 feet (about 228 square feet) — shared between two people, which works out to less floor space per person than a parking spot. Singles typically run 10 × 12 feet or smaller. That's why the golden rule of dorm shopping is measure before you buy: furniture that looks reasonable online has a way of not fitting once two beds, two desks, and two dressers are in the room.
Standard dorm furniture sizes
The Twin XL bed (38″ × 80″) is the biggest item in almost every dorm room. School-provided desks are usually about 42″ × 24″, dressers about 30″ × 24″, and wardrobes around 36″ × 24″ where closets aren't built in. Whether your bed lofts changes everything — a lofted bed frees up roughly 21 square feet underneath for a desk, seating, or storage, which is why it's worth finding out before buying under-bed bins in any specific size.
