Why make a roommate agreement at all?

Almost every roommate conflict comes down to one thing: two people had different expectations and neither said them out loud. One person assumes midnight is a normal bedtime; the other assumes 2 AM. One thinks snacks are communal; the other labeled that peanut butter for a reason.

A roommate agreement isn't a legal document — it's a ten-minute conversation that prevents a semester of passive-aggressive sticky notes. Fill it out together during the first week, when nobody is annoyed at anybody yet. If you want to go deeper on what to cover, read our full guide on what to put in a roommate agreement.

Do this before move-in too

Before you both buy a mini fridge, take the roommate compatibility quiz and swap results, and split the big shared purchases so you don't end up with two microwaves. Once you're living together, the roommate expense splitter keeps shared costs fair. And if things ever do go sideways, we have a guide for dealing with a difficult roommate without blowing up the friendship.

Roommate agreement FAQ

Is a roommate agreement legally binding?

No — this is a friendly agreement, not a legal contract. Its job is to get expectations out in the open before small annoyances turn into semester-long grudges. Many universities actually require roommates to fill out a version of this during the first week.

When should we fill this out?

The first week of living together is ideal — before habits form and before anything has gone wrong. Doing it over text before move-in also works. It is a lot easier to agree on quiet hours when nobody is annoyed yet.

What if my roommate breaks the agreement?

Bring it up early and casually — "hey, we agreed on this" is a much easier conversation when there is something written down. If problems continue, your RA can mediate, and having an agreement makes that conversation faster and fairer.

What should a college roommate agreement include?

The big five: quiet hours, guests, cleaning, shared items, and how you will bring up problems. Those five topics cover the vast majority of roommate conflicts. Our generator walks you through each one in about two minutes.
